Southampton Schools' Business Challenge

Working with Solent University to inform the City of Culture bid

Three Southampton schools (St George; Bitterne Park; Cantell) will participate in a challenge led by Solent University.

In this pilot programme, Year 9 and 10 pupils will act as consultants representing the youth of Southampton to assist the Southampton UK City of Culture 2025 Committee in identifying what young people consider to be the key promotional areas for marketing of the City.  The students will also identify the benefits that winning the City of Culture bid could bring to Southampton. The UK City of Culture 2025 bid is an opportunity to celebrate the uniqueness and diversity of the City and showcase our ambitious plans for the future.

Pupils will work on this brief as they would in the business world, where employees are assigned tasks requiring short, intense focus within tight deadlines. The students will be given two weeks of Business Studies lessons dedicated to knowledge building and then groups will work together independently to collate their findings.  Solent University will provide additional support and knowledge around the brief in pre-recorded sessions.

In addition, a guest speaker from the Southampton City of Culture Committee will provide students with an in-depth understanding of the bid and its importance to the City.  Students will then present their findings to their respective Business Studies teachers, which might take the form of a video, a series of blogs for social media, a poster, an interactive presentation or a written report.

The Grand Final

Once pupils have presented their findings to their Business Studies teachers, groups will be shortlisted and invited to the Grand Final at Solent University to present their findings to a panel made up of a range of stakeholders from across the City.  This panel will then identify their overall winning group. The panel is looking for innovative, fresh thinking and new ideas especially from young people who live in and around the City of Southampton.
